Orchard Garden
|
|
The
tranquil oasis that is our 'Orchard garden' is set against an open vista
of farmland and hedgerows; ponies and sheep wander the fields; butterflies
and many birds have made their homes with us.
The
garden (free entry) consists mainly of large herbaceous borders. In
Summer these resemble a 'Monet' painting, with their masses of colours and
forms. Many of these plants are rare varieties others are all
cottage favourites, so hard to find these days; all are used for
propagation to supply our Plant Centre.
The small
woodland area, under the apple trees is a surprising entrance,
creating a frame for the first glimpse of what lies beyond.

Sweeping
informality greets the visitor and at different times of the year you will
find Crambe, Cardoon, Asphodel, Oriental Poppies, stately Lupin,
delicate Akebia, the imposing Cardiocrinum and a riot of scent &
colour.

Beyond lies the gateway to
the more formal garden with it's rose pillars, and Clematis surrounded by
a sea of perennials and framed by the massive Rheum tanguticum.
Turn around and you will
face the wild form of our pond and bog garden and the Butterfly garden
beyond, here you can watch the garden gradually take shape while sitting
on one of our hand carved benches.
